Circulation

The Fine Arts Library contains Circulating, Restricted, and Non-Circulating materials. Restricted and Non-Circulating Books are stamped accordingly. Patrons may also access what they have checked out by logging into Mirlyn. Also, check out the general UM Library Policies for more information.

New Students and faculty members, please verify your library privileges by contacting the Circulation Desks in the Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library on Central Campus or at the Reserves Desk in the Art, Architecture, and Engineering Library on North Campus before coming to the Fine Arts Library.

Desk, Flat Folios, OSR, and Special Collections Materials

  • These materials do not leave the library and may be consulted upon request.

Staff Offices

  • Materials located in the Fine Arts Staff offices such as History of Art Department's Master's Essays and Dissertations, University of Michigan Museum publications, microform, and CD-ROM's may only be used in the library for 4 hour periods.

Returning Materials

  • Bound periodicals, reserve material, and CD-ROMS must be returned to the Fine Arts Library.
  • Other items may be returned to any library within the University Library system.

Holds and Recalls

  • Patrons who need an item that has been borrowed by someone else may request that a hold or recall be placed on that item.
  • When a recallis placed on an item, the borrower will receive a recall notice via e-mail giving a NEW DUE DATE on it. The item is then due on the NEW DUE DATE, regardless of the date stamped in the back of the book.
  • When a hold has been placed on an item, it cannot be renewed by the current borrower.
  • An email will be sent notifying the person who placed the hold or recall when the book is returned and available for pick-up.
  • Borrowing privileges are suspended if a recalled item is not returned by the new recall due date.
  • Recall fines of $2.00 per day are assessed to borrowers who do not return the recalled item by the new due date. There is no grace period.
  • Library policy protects the privacy of our clientele, so information about what others have borrowed or recalled may not be divulged.
  • Recall requests can be made :
    • Through Mirlyn as long as a user has signed on to My Account
    • Via the Fine Arts Library Recall Request form

Renewal Guidelines

  • Renewals can be made through Mirlyn. Login, then use MY ACCOUNT.
  • In addition, the Fine Arts Library will process renewal requests for materials from the FAL in a number of different ways:
    • In person - bring your M-Card, other UM ID or library card and the items or a list of their barcodes to the Circulation Desk.
    • By mail - only for faculty borrowers or their proxies.
    • By phone - (734)-764-5405.
    • By email - using the electronic Renewal Request Form.
  • There is a default 3 renewal limit for Fine Arts Library books. Generally, a renewal request will be granted if a hold or recall has not been placed on an item.
  • To process renewals we need:
    • Patron's barcode number (begins 29015) located on the back of M-Cards or library cards
    • Items' barcode number (begins 39015) which is usually located inside the back cover of each book, or specific renewal instructions.
  • Requests submitted by email will be renewed on the date the request is posted, with a renewal period equal to that of the original loan. (Loan periods are given above.) If the book is overdue on the day an electronic renewal request is submitted, regular and recall fines will be assessed through to that date and a notice of the charges will be sent.

  • If the library is unable to renew an item for any reason, an email message will be sent before the end of the next working day, if at all possible. Please note that, in these cases, overdue or recall fines will continue to accumulate until the item has been returned!

  • The following items cannot be renewed:
    • Journals
    • Reserve Items
    • Items that have been placed on hold or recalled for another borrower.
    • Items that have been billed for replacement.
    • Items obtained via Interlibrary Loan (call 763-6407).
    • Borrowers whose privileges have expired or been blocked
