University of Michigan Library Instructional Statement
The richness, power, and versatility of today’s information environment have created expanded opportunities for
scholars. Hallmarks include the growth of digital collections, changes in the process of scholarly communication, and
increases in the need for life-long learning. To succeed, users must learn new concepts, sources and techniques, and
then re-learn them quickly as they change yet again. This is a significant challenge. It is also one which the Library
can help meet through its instructional program.
Emphasizing particular knowledge, skills, and behaviors, library instruction seeks to teach users:
- Research skills apropos to scholarly information
- Technology for information management
- Critical thinking and evaluation of sources
- Legal and ethical uses of information
- The broad range of information resources available.
The Library readily customizes its services, which are free of charge, to determine client needs, develop
content, and provide instruction and follow-up. The Library collaborates with individual instructors, small
groups, and curriculum committees, as well as student groups. Instruction is offered by specialists in the
University Library system and covers all subjects and formats
