Study Spaces

- Art, Architecture & Engineering Library:

- Study areas are located on all floors. The second floor study rooms are available by reservation or on a walk-in basis if they are not being used.
- Dentistry Library:

- The Dentistry Library has individual study carrels lining the walls of the main floor of the library, and small group study tables available on the mezzanine of the library.
- Hatcher Graduate Library:

132 assigned, locked carrels are located on floors 3-6 of the South building, which are assigned to University of Michigan doctoral candidates or faculty members who are actively engaged in writing a dissertation or a work for publication. Stacks level 3-6 in the South building and open study space in the North building stacks are available to graduate and undergraduate students on a first-come, first served basis.
- Fine Arts Library:

- Fine Arts Library has a total of 76 study spaces and 24 seating carrels that are for history of art graduate students only.
- Music Library:

- Music Library has 50 assigned study carrels (for School of Music faculty & students only), as well as ample open (table) study space on the main and balcony levels.
- Public Health Library:

- Public Health Library & Informatics has an open study space with several tables and chairs for individual or group study. Individuals may prefer to use the study carrels along the perimeter of the library or to lounge at one of the sofa chairs in the Current Journals area.
- Shapiro Science Library:

- Tables and chairs are provided throughout the third floor for consulting and reading the collection. While the tables near the services desks, computer stations and copiers do not offer much quiet study space, the seating area towards the south end of the floor (facing South University) may be less noisy. There are two group study rooms on the third floor. Priority is for groups of 3 or more people who wish to study in a private setting. Rooms are unlocked and there no reservations are necessary. First come, first served. Tables and chairs, along with carrels, are provided throughout the fourth floor for consulting and reading the collection as well as for quiet study. Fourth floor Graduate Student Study Room: University of Michigan graduate students in the sciences needing quiet space in the library have access to this room. The key is available for checkout at the Science Library's Public Service (main) Desk to eligible graduate students using a valid University of Michigan I.D.

- Social Work Library:

- There are two group study rooms, available for use only by social work students, staff, and faculty on a reservation basis.
- Sumner and Laura Foster Library:

- Foster is one of the quieter libraries on campus, so is ideal for those who are looking for a quiet place to study. The main room is especially quiet while the back room is sometimes used for group study and may be a little louder.
- Taubman Medical Library:

- Taubman has 11 group study rooms, plus study seating in the library for about 200 patrons. Four of the group study rooms have priority use by medical students from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, but can be used by anyone if medical students are not using them. Classroom services (through the Medical Schooll) handles reservations for these rooms, not the library. Reservation information is online.
